What is Revenge Bedtime Procrastination ?

Revenge bedtime procrastination refers to a behavior where you deliberately delay your bedtime, despite knowing you may not get enough sleep as a result, as a form of rebellion or “revenge” against a lack of free time during the day.

This behavior is often exhibited by individuals who feel their daytime hours are overly dominated by work or responsibilities, leaving them with little time for personal leisure or self-care.

By staying up late, you’re able to claim some time for themselves. However, the consequences are often negative, as it can lead to insufficient sleep and associated health problems like fatigue, reduced cognitive function, mood disorders, and a weakened immune system.

This term gained popularity on social media platforms and in academic discussions on sleep behavior and work-life balance.

Take the Bedtime Procrastination Scale Quiz !

The Bedtime Procrastination Scale (BPS) is a Questionnaire developed by Kroese and colleagues to measure the severity of revenge sleep procrastination. The BPS consists of several questions about sleep habits.

Your responses to these questions will help determine if, and how often, you’re postponing sleep. Think of it as a report card for your bedtime routine. By using the BPS, you can gain a better understanding of your sleep patterns and identify areas for improvement.

This BPS is a scientifically valid test and a reliable method to measure sleep procrastination, which has been widely used in research studies on procrastination and insomnia.
